The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington

The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington, Inc. was formed out of a deep concern for the enormous and growing number of homeless and unwanted animals in the metropolitan area.

Focusing our efforts on the homeless cats in our community, our volunteers work to provide needy cats with medical care, food and temporary shelter until permanent, loving homes can be found. We also strive to strengthen the valuable bond between cats and their human companions through education and counseling.

The Feline Foundation's services include:

Rescue – Rescue team volunteers retrieve rescue calls from the Foundation's voice mail line and respond to each call, assessing the urgency of the situation. Cats and kittens are brought into our program as soon as foster homes become available when a foster home is found, the Rescue Team member arranges for the caller to transport the cat to one of our participating veterinarians (The veterinarians at Pet Medical Center of Springfield are participating veterinarians). All cats are examined, have tested negative for feline leukemia, are vaccinated, and, if necessary, are treated for fleas and ear mites. Cats and kittens over 6 months old are spayed or neutered.

Foster Care – volunteers provide food and tender loving care to rescued cats and kittens in their own homes until permanent homes are found. Foster parents play a pivotal role in ensuring a happy future for friendly, homeless cats. Before placement in foster care or permanent homes, all cats are examined by a veterinarian according to our rescue guidelines mentioned above.

Surrender – Pet owners are offered an alternative to municipal shelters when they can no longer keep their companion cat. Cats remain in their owner's care and custody while suitable adoptive homes are sought.

Adoption – We specialize in matching cats and kittens with adoptive parents based on applications and in-depth interviews in order to identify the kitty characteristics that best suit the prospective owner's desires and lifestyle. Personality profiles are maintained on cats in our program to better facilitate this process. Adoption fairs are held monthly and approved applicants can also schedule an appointment to meet cats in their foster homes.

Counseling and Education – We work to benefit both people and animals through education in responsible pet ownership and community assistance. Counseling is available to all cat owners who may be experiencing behavior problems with their cat or kitten or simply have questions concerning their pet. We also offer a wide variety of informative literature to better help people understand and care for their furry friend. Packets containing basic cat care information and tips are given to all new pet owners.

We receive no government funding or assistance and rely on your donations to continue our work. All donations go directly to support medical care and maintenance of our rescued felines.
We do not euthanize healthy animals.

Fostering

We desperately need foster homes to temporarily care for homeless cats and kittens until a permanent home is found. Fostering is a wonderful way to give a cat or kitten a second chance for a happy life. The Feline Foundation covers all veterinary expenses and all kitties are checked by a veterinarian, have tested negative for feline leukemia and are vaccinated before they are placed in foster care.

The number of kitties we are able to help depends on the number of foster homes we have. Please consider volunteering for this rewarding and urgently needed position. No special skills or facilities are required to foster – just a warm and safe place (even a spare bathroom is better than being homeless), some food, water, a litter box and most importantly – LOTS OF LOVE.

If you are interested or would like more information, please call us at 703-920-8665 and leave your name and phone number in mailbox #1. Please help us help the kitties – your concern and commitment make the difference between life and death for these wonderful felines.

We Need Your help!

The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington needs volunteers to help with rescue, adoption, placement, fund raising and especially foster homes for needy cats and kittens. Even a few hours a month would mean much to a needy animal.

We are also looking for farms and stables for homeless, free-roaming cats. These cats prefer outdoor living with safe access to shelter and food. If you have a big heart and lots of land, please consider giving these cats a home to call their own.

Call us at 703-920-8665 for more information. We appreciate your help and support!
